Awards & Distinctions
Five members of the Centenary College Board of Trustees were awarded Lifetime status during the Annual Board of Trustees meeting. The new Lifetime members include Robert Goodwin, the Rev. William Hutchinson, Patsy O’Brien, Vernon Sanders and Miriam Sklar. Noting their resolve and commitment for Centenary College, the group was inducted into Lifetime membership by College President Dr. Kenneth L. Schwab and Chairman of the Board of Trustees William Anderson. Centenary College is a private, four-year arts and sciences college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded in 1825, it is the oldest chartered liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Centenary is one of 16 colleges and universities constituting the Associated Colleges of the South and is regularly rated as one of the top colleges in the South. In 2008, Centenary College celebrates 100 years in Shreveport and Bossier City.
The Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) has named Paula Hickman and Terry Strain from Shreveport as two of the 2008 Louisiana Heroine Award winners. The annual Louisiana Heroine Awards pay tribute to women who volunteer for nonprofit organizations and positively impact the lives of others. Hickman was nominated by Volunteers of America of North Louisiana, while Strain was nominated by The Pool of Siloam Medical Ministry, Inc. Ten additional women from throughout the state were also named as 2008 Heroines. Other nominees from Shreveport were Mary Jean Grant, Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana; Linda Hamm, The Arc of Caddo-Bossier; Bonnie Watkins, Centenary College of Louisiana; Linda McKaskle Pedro, Shreveport Little Theater Guild. LANO is a statewide membership network of over 1,000 nonprofits, foundations, corporations and individuals dedicated to improving the nonprofit sector to provide quality services to Louisiana citizens. LANO works to strengthen, promote and build the capacity of Louisiana’s nonprofit sector through membership services, education and advocacy.
The Outpatient Renal Dialysis Unit at Willis-Knighton has received two awards from the End Stage Renal Disease Network 13, an agency that oversees strict compliance standards for dialysis units in Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The WK Unit received an Award of Excellence for a 100 percent compliance rating for the year 2007. This award is based upon timely and accurate reporting of forms to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The WK Dialysis Unit is one of only 45 members of what CMS calls its “Club 100.”An Award of Achievement was given to the unit for maintaining a consistent record of 90 percent or better in submitting 2007 patient data forms in a timely and accurate manner. The Outpatient Renal Dialysis Unit is located on the Willis-Knighton Medical Center campus at 2716 Portland Ave. in Shreveport.
